Look to the smaller coastal resort bases around Puerto Rico on Gran Canaria, or around Playa de las Americas and Costa Adeje on Tenerife. If you pick up a cheap car hire on the Canary Islands being slightly off the beaten track won't matter as you can use your car hire to access main resort facilities nearby such as waterparks and golf courses.
