Delightful Tigaday is situated in El Hierro's interior in the stunningly rural region of La Frontera. Indeed you'll find Tigaday is often referred to as Frontera. An excellent base for walking on El Hierro, Tigaday offers excellent local amenities, good access to trails, and it's central position is ideal for driving tours of the island, west to Sabinosa and east to the nearby Ecomuseo de Guinea and beyond to Valverde, and local Miradors - de Jinama and Mirador de la Pena (famously designed by Cesar Manrique with a restaurant and stunning views of El Golfo bay).
You're situated adjacent to the spectacular El Golfo crest shaped bay. Volcanically formed, a great chunk of El Hierro broke off here about 50,000 years ago - the result of a massive earthquake. The resultant tidal wave is thought to have reached about 100m and probably did crash onto the American coast.

It's been quiet volcanically however on El Hierro in recent times, the last eruption was 200 years ago. There's still about 500 volcanic cones on the island, some of which have been covered by lava flows. Tigaday is the perfect rural El Hierro base for exploring the Malpais (bad lands) of El Hierro to the far west, and it's ideal for walkers with numerous old Camino trails situated nearby. There's ample amenities here, albeit very low key, including supermarkets, bars, restaurants, car rental and a petrol station.
Nearby La Maceta offers a selection of natural saltwater pools along it's coast. Swimming here is only at low tide, as during high tide the pools are submerged and dangerous! Look out for views of Tigaday's iconic little church perched on a hill in the town, plus the nearby Los Roques de Salmor where the ancient Lagarto del Samor lizard was recently discovered. There's a recouperation project afoot and you can view these lizards as part of your tour of the Ecomuseo de Guinea. This museum is only about 5km north of Tigaday and well worth a visit.
