Alajera on La Gomera is makes for an excellent rural walking base and is situated to the north of La Gomera Airport and inland from Playa Santiago. It sits within the ancient Gomeros regions of Ipalan and Orone and is attractively set down the slopes of a hill.
Alajero is a large village really, very rural and within easy access of Playa Santiago on the southern coast. Getting less of the mist down here in the south it's a warmer La Gomera base in general than some of the rural north locations such as Vallehermoso.
Alajero is renowned for it's palm trees. There's a 16th century church - the Iglesia del Savador - in the centre, but most visitors come to view the only remaining Drago (dragon) tree on La Gomera.
In September Alajero pulls in the crowds from all over La Gomera to celebrate the Fiesta del Paso.
