Budget car rental on La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro is easy, either through pickup from La Gomera Airport, La Palma Airport or El Hierro Airport (a number of car hire firms are based at all the airports on these three west Canary islands) or from the main resort areas including Valle Gran Rey, Playa Santiago and San Sebastian on La Gomera, and Los Cancajos and Puerto Naos on La Palma. In El Hierro it's easiest to book car hire for pick-up from the airport, as the main centres here, including Tigaday and Valverde are smaller. El Hierro Airport however has a number of car rental firms based there. Most people pick-up their car hire from El Hierro Airport - and pre-book. A small number of cars come across on the ferries too, so for example you can bring your Tenerife car hire with you if you're coming to La Gomera from Los Cristianos on Tenerife.

As with all the Canary Islands and mainland Spain, driving in La Gomera is on the right hand side, with seat belt wearing including back seats legally required. Other legal requirements include the wearing of helmets by motorcyclists and those on scooters, as with Tenerife. There are no motorways on La Gomera (it's only 25km across!) and speed limits are rarely mared on the roads. Officialy urban built up areas, ie. Valle Gran Rey, San Sebastian and Playa Santiago will have a speed limit of 50kmph, but traffic moves a lot slower than this in the centres. San Sebastian particularly has very narrow streets.
Although only 25km across, don't be fooled - driving around La Gomera is not a quick affair. Most roads are winding and ascending. The island is covered with ravines and ascends sharply as you move towards the centre. Take your time, all main roads are in excellent condition. Just bear in mind that driving from San Sebastian to the visitor centre near Las Rosas in the north takes over an hour and is quite tiring driving. Give yourself plenty of time and fill up with petrol before you set off.
Another thing to watch whilst driving around La Gomera is petrol! Fill up before you head off is the general rule. There are petrol stations at San Sebastian, Vallehermoso, Playa Santiago and Valle Gran Rey. If you pick up a car hire from La Gomera airport it's well worth filling up at Playa Santiago adjacent, if you've been given only half a tank of petrol.
Driving in La Palma is a joy, but can be hard work. All roads are in excellent condition so no problems there, but mountain driving around the Caldera de Taburiente in the north of the island can be quite tiring so don't plan too long a route all in one day. The LP 1032 road which winds up from Los Cancajos and Santa Cruz de la Palma is one of the most stunningly beautiful roads on the Canary Islands, but the twists and turns early on particularly need a bit of effort. If you're taking this route up to Roque de los Muchachos a top tip is to come back via the LP1 down along the west coast then back across via the fast LP2 route. Or indeed vice versa, calling in at the El Paso visitor centre.
One of the fastest ways to get from east to west, or vice versa from Santa Cruz east to Los Llanos De Aridane West is via the LP2 with it's long tunnel. This route hooks into the visitor's centre just outside El Paso where you can pick up hiking maps and a guide to the national park. To the south La Palma is flatter so driving is much easier here, although you can get the mists!
Car Hire is highly recommended on La Palma for getting to and from walking trails and to really explore everything this beautiful green Canary Island has to offer. Easy car hire pickups can be arranged either from the Airport (probably the best way of doing it) or from the main resorts of Los Cancajos on the east side, and Puerto Naos on the west.

Cheap car rental on El Hierro couldn't be easier. Best pre-booked for pickup at El Hierro's Airport, car hire on El Hierro is highly recommended as buses are a little infrequent, and a car makes it easier to access all the camino trails across the island.
Pre-booking is highly recommended - click through to the cheap car hire Canary Islands weblink right for Holiday Autos abroad, or contact Iknow-Holidays direct on 0871 423 5056 and we'll do all the work for you.
Driving around El Hierro is a pleasurable experience indeed. The small road network on the island is in excellent condition, with the main road down from Valverde and the Airport to Frontera making it quick and easy to get to Tigaday if that's where you're staying within El Golfo Bay. The only hazard to watch out for, as with the heights on both La Palma and La Gomera, is the perpetual mists which can make vision difficult at times. There are lower lying roads offering alternative routes from east to west so take those if the mists are hazardous!
Another issue to be aware of is that there are only three petrol stations on El Hierro - one at Valverde, one in La Frontera and another at La Restinga in the south. If you're exploring the west of the island around El Sabina make sure you fill up at one of these petrol stations prior to your tour.
