West Canaries Tourism Guide - West Canaries Flights

Cheap flights to La Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera are mostly to be found from Binter Canarias Airlines. If travelling from the UK you'll usually opt to connect via Binter Canarias from either Tenerife North Airport or Gran Canaria's Las Palmas Airport. Both Tenerife North and Gran Canaria Airport offer daily flights to all three of the Western Canary Islands. Direct charter flights from the UK to La Palma are currently much less frequent than flights to the other big Canary Island players, however direct charter flights from the UK to La Palma look set to increase with an additional terminal currently being built at La Palma Airport (not very popular with local La Palma residents is this!).

Connecting to the Western Canary Islands couldn't be easier, and is reasonably cheap. You've two choices - flying or ferry. Binter Canarias offers daily flights to La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro from Gran Canaria and Tenerife North Airports. Less frequently connecting flights are offered between Lanzarote and La Palma and El Hierro and La Palma. Ferries run regularly from Los Cristianos in south Tenerife across to San Sebastian on La Gomera. Ferries also connect from Los Cristianos to El Hierro and La Palma. For help and assistance in booking cheap flights or ferries to La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro contact Iknow-holidays booking line direct on 0871 423 5056.

La Gomera Airport & Getting to La Gomera

Getting to La Gomera from UK airports is easy. You've a few options, first a cheap flight to Gran Canaria available from most UK and Irish Airports, then a connecting flight onwards to La Gomera from Las Palmas Airport, Gran Canaria. Alternatively, book a direct flight from the UK (limited airports only) to Tenerife North Airport, then connect on to La Gomera. Thomsonfly have flights direct to Tenerife North airport from Manchester, Nottingham East Midlands and Gatwick Airports, albeit rather infrequent and less than 3 times weekly. Still, it's a start and welcome for those UK holiday makers prefering to stay in North Tenerife including chic Puerto de la Cruz or for those wishing to connect on to La Gomera. GB Airways (an operating wing of British Airways) also fly twice weekly from London Gatwick direct to Tenerife North Airport (currently states winter only). Direct flights from the UK to Tenerife North Airport look set to increase in the future, especially as work gets underway on the new Terminal at Tenerife Sur!

Alternatively you can choose to fly direct on a cheap flight to Tenerife Sur (south) airport, then taxi across to Los Cristianos for the fast ferry services to San Sebastian on La Gomera. If you're not stopping off in either Gran Canaria or Tenerife, and want to get to La Gomera as quickly as possible, it'll be easier to fly with a connecting flight. It's also easy to pick up car hires from the airports, so you won't be hauling baggage around. Numerous car hire firms operate from La Gomera's airport. There are more UK flights to Gran Canaria's Las Palmas Airport than Tenerife North airport at the moment, so it's probably best to connect via Gran Canaria!

At La Gomera's little airport things move at a slow pace here - a welcome relief if you're island hopping. If you want the best views of Mount Teide, then take the flight from Tenerife North to La Gomera, or for that matter El Hierro. These flights zoom right past the summit of Teide and it's almost worth taking the flight to La Gomera just for that, and then treat of treats Garajonay National Park is waiting for you on landing.

The only airline currently serving La Gomera Airport is Binter Canarias Airlines. No international flights come in here, just connecting inter-island flights from Tenerife North Airport and Gran Canaria's Las Palmas Airport. There's about a couple of flights daily from each, making it easy to spend part of your holiday in La Gomera. The flight to La Gomera from Tenerife North Airport takes around 30 minutes, and is quick, easy and efficient. If you're staying up north on Tenerife, for example Puerto de la Cruz, a daytrip to La Gomera is made easy via Tenerife North Airport.Clean, efficient, small and friendly, Binter offer regular flights from both Gran Canaria and Tenerife North to La Gomera. Not by chance were Binter voted best airline for 2005/6 - this airline is the tops for professional service and will have you in La Gomera in under half an hour from Tenerife North.

La Gomera Ferry, Ferry from Los Cristianos to La Gomera

The main settlement areas, and bases for visitors on La Gomera include San Sebastian (the capital and La Gomera's main port) to the south east, the Valle Gran Rey area to the west and Playa Santiago near the only golf course on the island and La Gomera's small airport. It's easy to take a daytrip to La Gomera via the fast ferry which departs from Los Cristianos harbour five times daily and the other way from San Sebastian to Los Cristianos 5 times daily. The boat trip is a mere 40 minutes. It's easy then to split your holiday with a week on Tenerife, and another on La Gomera. Binter Canarias flights arrive on La Gomera daily coming from both Tenerife North Airport, and Gran Canaria's Las Palmas Airport.

The Garajonay Expres ferry whisks it's way between Valle Gran Rey, Playa Santiago, San Sebastian and Los Cristianos on Tenerife daily. Check the Garajonay Expres Ferry website right for full details. It departs from San Sebastian harbour to Playa Santiago and Valle Gran Rey daily at 9.40am, 3.15pm and 8.20pm. The Garajonay Expres is one of the best ways to get about La Gomera, and a lot quicker. It takes just 15 minutes by boat from San Sebastian to Playa Santiago in the south (the drive would take over half an hour!), and from Playa Santiago to Valle Gran Rey it's a mere 20 minutes (the drive from San Sebastian to Valle Gran Rey is a good 45 minutes at least).

Ferries run regularly from San Sebastian to Los Cristianos on the southern tip of Tenerife. (via the fast Fred Olsen Expres/a mere 30 minute boat trip). From Monday to Friday ferry departure times from San Sebastian (La Gomera) are 7.30am, 10.30am, 1pm, 4.30pm and 6.30pm. On Saturdays ferry departure times from San Sebastian (to Los Cristianos) are 7.30am, 10.30am, 1pm, 4.30pm and 7.15pm. For ferry bookings and assistance phone Iknow-holidays direct on 0871 423 5056.

Transmediterranea run daily ferries to El Hierro which may stop first at Los Cristianos before heading towards El Hierro. Contact Iknow-holidays for booking assistance. Many visitors from Tenerife (especially daytrippers to La Gomera from the South Tenerife resorts) choose the swift ferry services from Los Cristianos over to San Sebastian on La Gomera. The Fred Olsen express does the journey in 30 minutes, whilst other ferry services offer a more leisurely pace! The Garajonay Expres calls in at Los Cristianos, and stops at San Sebastian, Playa Santiago and Valle Gran Rey on La Gomera. Cheap Flights La Palma Canary Islands

La Palma Airport is situated on the east side of the island just south of Los Cancajos and the capital Santa Cruz de la Palma. There's a new Terminal currently being built here (making for much building work as of summer 2006!). There's been some protest on the island against this from local residents fearing the influx of more visitors with more flights will inevitably put increasing environmental strain on this green Canary Island. Watch this space!

The number of direct flights to La Palma then is set to increase with the new terminal. Currently direct flights are available from the UK (JMC are one airline providing them) but they run less frequently than direct flights to say Tenerife and Gran Canaria. (see the Cheap Flights Canary Islands weblink right for the best deals on direct flights to La Palma). Alternatively you can connect to La Palma on daily inter-island flights from Binter Canarias Airlines from both Tenerife North and Gran Canaria. The flight time from Tenerife North to La Palma is about 30 minutes, whilst Gran Canaria to La Palma is around 50 minutes.

Despite looking like a building site at the time of writing, La Palma airport is very well equipped with numerous car rental agencies based here, plus an excellent tourist information centre/kiosk, cafes, bars, a restaurant and terrace viewing area. Buses run regularly from the airport to Santa Cruz de la Palma (Bus no. 8).

Unlike other Canary Islands, La Palma's busiest flight period is winter rather than summer, when walkers flock to the island in their droves.

Ferry to La Palma Canary Islands

The main port for ferry arrivals on La Palma is Santa Cruz de la Palma, the capital. The Fred Olsen Express calls in at Santa Cruz having departed from Los Cristianos (usually stopping at San Sebastian on La Gomera first). This trip takes about 2 hours.

Both Transmediteranea and Naviera Armas offer ferry crossings to La Palma, departing from Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas on Gran Canaria. These are usually weekly runs and take a lot longer than the fast express from Los Cristianos.

For more information on Ferries to La Palma, and booking assistance contact Iknow-holidays direct on 0871 423 5056.

Cheap Flights El Hierro

As with La Gomera there are no direct flights to El Hierro's little airport. Connecting flights run regularly from Tenerife North Airport and Gran Canaria Airport courtesy of Binter Canaries Airlines. There are around 4 flights daily from these two other Canary Islands airports. Contact Iknow-Holidays direct on 0871 423 5056 for booking and more information.

El Hierro Airport sites just 12km east of Valverde the capital and the excellent small network of roads, including the main road now running direct down to Frontera (including through a mammoth tunnel), all branch out from El Hierro's airport and Valverde. Car Hire is easy from the airport - a number of car hire firms are based there and it really is worth considering car hire to fully enjoy all El Hierro has to offer.

El Hierro airport has what's probably the best source of tourist information on the island, situated at the kiosk area opposite the car hire firms.

Ferry wise, you can hook into the fast Fred Olsen Express which runs a daily ferry beginning at Los Cristianos on Tenerife, heading first towards San Sebastian on La Gomera then on to El Hierro arriving at Puerto de la Estaca on the North East side of the island. This fast ferry journey to El Hierro takes around 4 hours (flying from Tenerife North is a lot quicker - taking about 40 minutes). Transmediterranea also run a weekly ferry from Tenerife which takes longer, around 8 hours (it leaves late on Sunday evenings). For more information and booking contact Iknow-Holidays direct on 0871 423 5056. The port at La Estaca on El Hierro is now up and running, and ferry routes look set to increase to El Hierro in the near future.
