El Cortillo kind of gets forgotten in the excitement of the beautiful beaches at both Corralejo to the North and Jandia to the south. Visitors to Fuerteventura should know, especially the extreme watersports fanatics, that kite surfing is really taking off in El Cortillo on the north west coast within easy reach of Corralejo. You can see why - endless golden sands and the winds blow strong here - it's a beautiful spot, not yet seriously developed although showing potential to be so.
There's a pretty fortress on the coast here too, plus a charming selection of restaurants and bars. If you're looking for a quiet, picturesque base with a beautiful beach and access to kite surfing, windsurfing and surfing - consider El Cotillo on the north west coast of Fuerteventura.
It's hard to believe today looking at relatively low key and quiet El Cotillo (at the moment anyway) that this Fuerteventura location was once a key power hotspot to the Guanches of Maxorata, the northern kingdom with Jandia in the south. Some work is afoot in the harbour area however, with a scattering of building work, so El Cotillo looks set to expand.
Kitesurfing and surfing rules here at Cotillo, but particularly kitesurfing. Why not learn to kitesurf here. It's pretty, bohemian and quiet here - perfect for beach retreat holidays with a nod to superb kitesurfing and windsurfing facilities. You'll note the Fortaleza del Toston fort on the coast at El Cotillo - this fort dates back to 1797 and looks a little out of place in its contemporary setting (much like the one at Caleta de Fuste next to the swimming pool!).

Inland from El Cotillo, Lajares is a bit of a bohemian/surf centre. The camel rides, safaris and Oasis Animal Park and Gardens are also based here. (weblink right).
