Pretty and very Spanish feeling, Tarajalejo sits on the stretch of Fuerteventura coastline from Las Playitas and Gran Tarajal down to Costa Calma. This stretch has a traditional Canarian feel to it, although some luxury hotels and leisure complexes are beginning to emerge, particularly at Las Playitas. There's a mix of black sand and pebble beaches on this stretch, but many are blue flag beaches including Tarajalejo beach and Gran Tarajal beach. They also offer sheltered and calm waters, so are ideal for swimming and indeed snorkelling and diving around Las Playitas.
It's rocky in parts this coast, but dotted with pebble and black sandy beaches. There's some good opportunities for diving. Tarajalejo is not renowned for its beach - it's pebble and black sand here, but like Gran Tarajal there's a pleasant Canarian charm to this location, plus some excellent Canarian restaurants and an annual Sacred Heart Fiesta held on the 8th May. There's a nice quay, and it's a quiet and tranquil base, yet close enough to Costa Calma and the beautiful beach of Sotavento further south.
If you're looking for a traditional Canarian and quiet coastal base, then Tarajalejo, and indeed Las Playitas and Gran Tarajal are worth your attention. (the supermarkets in Gran Tarajal, serving the local Canarian population are a lot cheaper than the resorts!!). The secret of Tarajalejo, and other quieter bases on the Tuineje municipality stretch of coast is that they started life way back as working villages, usually with a focus on fishing in the villages on the coast. They are not manmade, they have their own history and character - so if you fancy a bit of that, base yourself in Tarajalejo, Gran Tarajal or Las Playitas.
Pretty fishing village Las Playitas on the East coast of Fuerteventura south of Caleta de Fuste is a quiet picturesque base (at the moment!). There's some development going on here in the form of luxury spa hotels and complexes, but it's being carefully done just outside the little fishing village. Las Playitas is a good central base, offering easy access south to Jandia, north to Puerto del Rosario and Corralejo and into the beautiful interior of Fuerteventural via Pajara.
Las Playitas is currently very popular with German holiday makers - the hotels are to the luxury spa end but not extortionately expensive. It's an ideal quiet pretty black beach base, with good diving, and all inclusive spa hotels offering gyms, deluxe swimming pools and various other amenities including kids clubs and nightly entertainment. It's definitely going to get bigger round these here parts!
