Fuerteventura Tourism Guide - Antigua

Antigua is another popular rural Fuerteventura base, and centrally placed for good walking holidays or cultural tours of the island's interior. You've easy access to down to the coast at the relatively new resort of Costa Antigua, and west towards Ajuy with its magnificent caves.

Antigua is one of the larger cultural rural centres on Fuerteventura. There's another 18th century church in the centre - it's the oldest on the island, the Nuestra Senora de Antigua. It's usually open so you can step inside this pretty church.

Antigua Tourist Information Guide Fuerteventura

Antigua and its surrounds have a rather busy Festival or Fiesta season. Antigua's festival - Nuestra Senora de Antigua celebrations are held annually on the 8th September.

A big tourist attraction in the area is the Molino de Antigua (Tel: 928 87 8041, open from 9.30am to 5.30pm from Tuesday to Friday, and Sundays). Here you'll find a restored windmill (a rather iconic feature of Fuerteventura although most you'll see dotted around the interior are rather neglected and disused now).

A car hire on Fuerteventura is highly recommended for exploring this area of Fuerteventura's rural interior, as there are numerous villages and sites dotted about. Roads are excellent, so it's a pleasure to drive around. (for the best online car hire deals on Fuerteventura see the cheap car hire link right for details, or phone iknow-holidays direct on 0871 423 5056).

Just 9km to the south of Antigua is the attractive little hamlet of Tiscamanita, renowned for its Windmill Interpretation Centre (Tel: 928 85 14 00, open 9.30am to 5.30pm from Tuesdays to Fridays and on Sundays). It's an interesting museum this, on many a Fuerteventura excursion list. You can see gofio being made here, and buy some. Gofio is a roasted mix of maize, barley and wheat and was part of the staple diet of the Guanche original settlers. Incidently, gofio was one of the few generic Guanche words common across all the Canary Islands in pre-hispanic times.
