Morro Jable, the furthest southern resort in Fuerteventura, competes well with its northern cousin Corralejo. Down from Sotavento, we're still in the land of stunning Fuerteventura beaches, and Playa del Matorral beach is the main hub with dividing lighthouse - naturists to the east or left as you look to the lighthouse from the promenade and non naturist to the right, unofficially speaking.
This Jandia resort is a long and pretty one, with an endless promenade stretching the length of the beach lined with a huge choice of relaxing bars, cafes, shops and restaurants. Morro Jable, and indeed all of this southern area of Fuerteventura is very popular with German visitors, although there's a scattering increasingly of British visitors too. A pleasant, tasteful family or watersports resort, Morro Jable makes a good base for Fuerteventura beach family holidays, or for visitors looking for activity holidays and wanting to hook into the many catamaran sailing trips, watersports and excursions available here.
Tourist development has been thoughtful here in Morro Jable on the Jandia Peninsula. It started life as a small fishing village, but has evolved from the mid-1980s into one of the most popular German holiday resorts on the planet! It's retained its fishing village roots however, particularly around the old town area and harbour where a few fishing vessels sit beside deluxe catamaran sailing boats serving visiting tourists. Extensions to the main motorway running south, now direct to Morro Jable, mean a quick transfer time of under an hour from Fuerteventura's airport.
Watersports are certainly on the menu in this bustling, yet relaxing Fuerteventura resort. It's easy to hook into a spot of windsurfing, jet ski, pedalo or a catamaran sailing trip along the Jandia Peninsula. Playa de Mattoral beach stretches in an easterly direction for about 4km so there's plenty of space on this beach - you're not likely to feel crowded. Development is set to continue in this Jandia Fuerteventura resort, with work afoot on extensions to the harbour and a new marina. The popular Magic Catamaran excursions depart from Morro Jable's harbour (see excursions section/Fuerteventura on this website for details). Magic Catamaran, Puerto de Morro Jable, Tel: 619 406904.
Another popular visitor attraction in Morro Jable is the Aloe Vera centre in the heart of the resort - if you've a touch of sunburn during your stay head here for some healing Aloe Vera pure juice - it works!
Morro Jable Tourist Information Centre, Cosmo Centro Comercial, Avenida Saladar (check out the Jandia tourist info link to the right also). It's open from 8am to 3pm from Monday to Friday. All your information on excursions, local watersports and good maps of Fuerteventura are available here, as well as useful Morro Jable resort guides.
Golf Club Fuerteventura, situated just 5km to the north of Morro Jable in the Valle de Butihondo area. (18 hole course). Tel: 928 16 00 34. This is one of a selection of new private golf resort clubs emerging in Fuerteventura, with a selection of luxury accommodation attached to it.
Most of the nightlife bustle is situated along the beachfront at Morro Jable, especially around the Cosmo Centro Commercial which has a number of pubs attached to it. There's a couple of discos in town, but in general nightlife is low key restaurant dining, and some live music bar scenes. No pumping clubs here.
Head for Cosmo Central Comercial on Avenida Saladar in Morro Jable for the popular Thursday Market held here weekly from 9am to 1.30pm (adjacent car park is available). Not much Canarian crafts here though, for that you'll have to head inland to the craft centres around Antigua and Betancuria.
Morro Jable harbour has regular ferries leaving from it heading usually for Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (the trip takes roughly about 3 and a half hours). A daily jetfoil operates to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and less frequently to Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Two ferry services currently offer the service. Contact Iknow-holidays direct on 0871 423 5056 for ferry bookings. Alternatively book online direct through the aferry.to weblink right.
Across the Canary Islands, a Catamaran Sailing trip along the Jandia Peninsula is one of the best catamaran trips available. See the stunning Jandia mountains from the sea (one of the best ways to see them!), swim in the crystal clear waters off Jandia and enjoy a sumptuous lunch with free flowing wine and beer. Jet ski rides and waterfun rides are usually available too.
Magic Catamaran sailing trips are highly recommended, with really friendly and professional staff. You can get active and try your hand at a spot of snorkelling or a jet ski ride, or simply lie back on the Catamaran deck and enjoy the ride. Magic Catamaran departs from Morro Jable harbour, and takes you on a leisurely sail along the Jandia Peninsula coastline. Staff are multi-lingual - catering for both English and German speaking holidaymakers. A great day out on the water for all the family!
Two Magic Catamaran sailing trips set off daily, one in the morning around 10-10.30am and another at around 3.30pm to 4pm (usually May to October only for the afternoon one). Contact Iknow-holidays booking line direct for information on booking this superb excursions. Tel: 0871 423 5056.
