Arguineguin is the Guanche word for 'quiet water'. Perhaps not quite so quiet these days, Arguineguin still manages to retain its original Canary fishing village charm to some extent, and it's certainly a lot more condensed and quieter here than nearby Puerto Rico.
Arguineguin still has part of its port dedicated to fishing and there's some excellent fish restaurants in this small Gran Canaria Southwest resort. There's actually a rather interesting fishing co-operative based here in Arguineguin, the co-operative Cofradia de Pescadores de Arguineguin. This cooperative tends to use most of the harbour, and serves local restaurants and more with delicious fresh fish.
Arguineguin is not a top beach holiday spot, rather a quiet harbour base, with easy access to the good beaches nearby. It's a good strolling location, with good fish restaurants, narrow streets and has still a distinct Canarian feel. This spot is also rather popular with Scandinavian tourists.
Walkers can enjoy a scenic hike over the mountain which separates Arguineguin from Puerto Rico. Arguineguin also makes an excellent base for moving inland and touring Gran Canaria by hire car. It sits directly at the end of the main GC1 motorway - a quick hop and skip upto Las Palmas and the eastern side of Gran Canaria too!
Arguineguin's weekly market is on Tuesday - and this is one of the biggest markets in the south of Gran Canaria! Well worth a visit. You can also stroll along Arguineguin's pretty coastal promenade all the way to Patalavaca. It's a good base for some picturesque and non-strenuous walking.
