Inland from Puerto de Mogan is the very attractive town of Mogan, another key administrative centre covering the southwest area of Gran Canaria. Mogan is a good walking base, with a selection of hiking trails branching out from it. An attractive rural base, Mogan also has a few excellent restaurants. This area is a popular haunt with jeep safaris coming up from Puerto Rico and Puerto de Mogan.
Cycling is also becoming an increasingly popular leisure pursuit in this area to the West of Gran Canaria. Off and on-road cycling are easily accessible, and particularly popular cycling routes include in and around Puerto Mogan, Puerto Mogan to Laja de la Mula and Puerto Mogan to Mogan. It's certainly a cycling challenge up the Barranco de Mogan!
Moving inland from Puerto de Mogan the main road winds up through the Barranco de Mogan through a selection of tiny hamlets and a spread of fields with crops such as papayas, mangos and bananas. You'll also spot a few interersting sculptures along the way - they're made from household implements.
Also on-route through the fertile Barranco de Mogan is a restored windmill (indeed the hamlet of El Molino de Viento just before you reach Mogan means windmill).
Once in Mogan visit the Acaymo Restaurante Grill, Calle El Tostador for some superb creative Canarian and international cuisine. There's numerous other choices of restaurants in Mogan (they're not cheap!), many of which serve traditional Canarian cuisine. Check the Mogan Official Tourist Information website right for a full listing of restaurants not just in Mogan, but also in surrounding villages and down in Puerto de Mogan and Puerto Rico.
The Mogan Tourist Board (see weblink right) recommends October to May as the best time for walking the Mogan Footpath network, with September and June a close second. During the winter months there is some pretty heavy rainfall to the west and some storms.
There's a good choice of footpaths in this area including Degollada de Tasart to Mogan (3 1/2 hours), Los Azulejos to El Roque de Veneguera (4 Hours), El Cercado to Molino de Viento (4 hours), Reservoir del Salto del Perro to La Solana (a long one at 7 hours), Reservoir del Salto del Perro to Molino de Viento (5 to 6 hours), La Solana to Reservoir del Salto del Perro (5 1/2 hours), La Solana to El Sao (4 hours) and Barranco Andres Ravine to Soria (4 hours).
All these hiking routes are listed with more indepth information on scenery on the Mogan Tourist Information website to the right. The area is marked by its dramatic ravines, so expect some challenging hiking walks here, combined with views of fertile valleys containing a selection of subtropical crops, plus some panoramic and spectacular views of this rugged landscape around Mogan.
Mogan is a top walking base on Gran Canaria, offering year round opportunity for Walking Holidays. Checkout the Sunflower Books 'Landscapes of Gran Canaria: Walks and Car Tours' for more walking tips and guides (link right).
