On the eastern side of Gran Canaria numerous historic Guanche sites and caves command your attention, as do some of Gran Canaria's best historic centres including Telde (Gran Canaria's second largest city).
On the coast discover one of the best diving sites on the Island, El Cabron and attractive cosmopolitan centres (good for shopping!) like Vecindario. Walking holidays Gran Canaria abound around one of the most beautiful ravine landscape areas of Gran Canaria in the Barranco de Guayadeque.
Pre-Spanish colonialist invasion Telde was the eastern centre to the Guanches, and the renowned Guanche King Doramas, it's believed, lived here. Telde's name actually tells us something about where the original settlers on the Canary Islands came from. Telde, situated in a most fertile area of Gran Canaria, has its equivalent province in Morrocco in a very fertile region called Tedlah. Early records point to about 14,000 Guanche dwellings here in Telde at the time of conquest, and Telde is the spot where the famous Idolo de Tara figure was discovered - you can see this in the Museo Canario in Las Palmas, just 12km north of Telde.
Not surprisingly, both Telde and Galdar - Guanche centres, developed pre-Spanish conquest as major towns. Colonialists have a habit of making their own mark on the centres of those who are colonised. Today Telde is Gran Canaria's second city after Las Palmas - with a population put well over 80,000. The historic old town area of Telde is particularly popular with visitors, or as a real Canarian base for holidaymakers looking to push into the National Park and up to the cultural North and Las Palmas.
South of Telde are the small market towns of Aguimes and Ingenio. This area in the east of Gran Canaria is beginning to open up, with an ecotourism and rural tourism slant. Check out the Aguimes Tourist Guide weblink right for the evidence. There are numerous Guanche caves in this area, many of which have painted walls and are of great historic interest. The Montana de Aguimes area, and Guayadeque Ravine are both now protected natural landscapes, and for walkers and tourers interested in Guanche history and viewing dramatic Canary Island landscapes, this area commands increasing attention!

Not widely known on the tourist location choice list of Gran Canaria, Vecindario, situated just a short drive from Gran Canaria Airport, is a real cosmopolitan centre on the island with two bustling shopping centres - La Ciel and Atlantico containing an excellent choice of shops, cinemas and more. Vecindario is actually a bit of a Gran Canaria hotspot base for shopping fans - checkout the choice of shops on the main Avenida de Canarias.
If you're looking for an excellent diving base on Gran Canaria, then both Vecindario and its coastal twin Arinaga are perfectly situated for access into the sublime underwater world of the El Cabron Marine Reserve on this stretch of coast.
