Gran Canaria Tourism Guide - Aguimes

South of Telde are the small market towns of Aguimes and Ingenio. This area in the east of Gran Canaria is beginning to open up, with an ecotourism and rural tourism slant. Check out the Aguimes Tourist Guide weblink right for the evidence. There are numerous Guanche caves in this area, many of which have painted walls and are of great historic interest. The Montana de Aguimes area, and Guayadeque Ravine are both now protected natural landscapes, and for walkers and tourers interested in Guanche history and viewing dramatic Canary Island landscapes, this area commands increasing attention!

Aguimes is the centre for an popular music festival held annually in September, and increasingly the Guanche and great walking territory around the ravines in this region of Gran Canaria are opening up. Check out the Aguimes and rural tourism Canary Islands weblinks right for more information.

Aguimes Rural Tourism and Festival

Aguimes so far in the Gran Canaria tourist itinerary has become well known for its Parque de Cocodrilos, - crocodiles, alligators, snakes and scorpions are all here in this animal park. Aguimes also comes alive annually from the 1st to 15th September for the popular musical festival gathering of European, South American and African music acts - check out the festival weblink right (Spanish only). The Barranco De Guayadeque situated between Aguimes and Ingenio contains an old troglodyte hamlet and some residents in the area still live in ingeniously designed caves.

The Barranco de Guayadeque ravine is one of the most striking landscapes in Gran Canaria, and pretty untouched by tourism. Apart from the valley floors here, the landscape is dramatically arid. Rare plants, mostly endemic to Gran Canaria, abound in the Aguimes and Ingenio area - hence its status as a nature reserve. This area was Guanche territory, evidenced by many of the guanche artefacts found here and now on display in the Museo Canario in Las Palmas.

Caves still feature heavily in modern day living in this area - expect to come across a few cave restaurants, cave houses, cave bars and a cave church! One of the most famous cave restaurants here is the Tagoror situated at the end of the ravine. Some tours and excursions are available to visit this restaurant, and this area from the main southern resorts. It's well worth exploring on your own too, if you've a car hire.

Both Aguimes and Ingenio may not be bustling, but these make excellent bases for walkers looking to explore the Guanche sites on the eastern side of Gran Canaria, and also to push into the interior of Gran Canaria to the Peaks and national park.
