Not by accident named Vega De San Mateo (Vega means fertile plain), this green and fertile valley location on Gran Canaria is in the heart of an agricultural area where figs, pears and peaches are grown.
Excellent as both a Gran Canaria walking base, with easy access to Las Palmas via the C811, San Mateo has a famous weekly agricultural market (popular with residents in Las Palmas who come to stock up on the fresh produce available at this market). Other attractions include the Museo Ethnologico exploring the every day life of Canarios living in this area in the past.
San Mateo is primarily an agricultural centre (hence its weekly agricultural market). It's an excellent interior Gran Canaria base if you're looking to touch a bit of real Canarios living. The Sunday morning market is also popular with visitors, as on offer is not just agricultural produce grown locally but also a selection of arts and crafts.
Also in the town is the attractive 17th century statue of San Mateo, the patron saint of farmers unsurprisingly. The Agricultural and Farming museum is located just near the entrance to San Mateo and is open Mondays to Saturdays 9.30am to 1pm.
