Moving nearer to Las Palmas, Santa Brigida is a hotspot residential area for the rather wealthy and sits within easy access of both Las Palmas and the central massif of Gran Canaria. Architectural styles are along the lines of regal looking villas, with numerous balconies.
The older section of the town consists of some delightful narrow street wandering, a pretty parish church which was finished around 1911, although it's the site of a previous church here which dates back to around 1525. Santa Brigida celebrates its festival on the first Sunday of August annually.
Santa Brigida is a good base for a walking holiday on Gran Canaria - it's ideally placed near the Caldera de Bandama, one of the largest extinct volcanic cones on Gran Canaria.
Nearby is hisoric La Atalaya and the splendid walking territory of the Caldera de Bandama. Atalaya was once a key defensive location, as from here you can see for miles across the landscape. There are vineyards in this area, producing some excellent wine - notably El Monte wine. Numerous flowers are also grown here.
