Santa Lucia has developed into a most attractive village, situated to the west of Aguimes. Many local residents work in the southern resorts of the island. Santa Lucia sits within a thriving farming region on Gran Canaria. If you're staying in Santa Lucia you'll be within easy reach too of the great windsurfing beach, Pozo Izquierdo.
The village church here is renowned for its white dome and dates from 1898, replacing the former 17th century church here.
There's some more fine liqueurs originating from Santa Lucia - namely mejunje which is a liqueur made from honey, rum and lemons! Check out too the renowned Hao Restaurant in Santa Lucia (where you can sample this liqueur and a superb choice of Canarian dishes). Interestingly, the owner runs the small Museo del Castillo de Fortaleza with some interesting Guanche artefacts on show including pottery and some mummies. Open from Mondays to Saturdays from 8am to 8pm and Sundays 8am to 17.00/5pm.
Santa Lucia makes a superb walking base again, with the nearby Fortaleza Grande rock formation which resembles a castle! Fortaleza Grande is famous as the location for the last Guanche stand in 1483 on Gran Canaria. Many Guanches refused to convert to Christianity and instead threw themselves off these rocks to their deaths. Every 29th April Santa Lucia pays tribute to this courage.
