Popular with day trippers, both Tejeda and nearby Cruz de Tejeda mark the central point of Gran Canaria. If you're looking for a good central walking and touring base, Tejeda is an excellent choice. Tejeda is also renowned for its almond flavoured confectionary and cakes and there's a choice of delectable pastry shops here, as well as spectacular views (on clear days) from Cruz de Tejeda across to Teide on Tenerife if you're lucky.
In the area, the popular visitor hotspot is Cruz de Tejeda with a stone cross atop of this viewing point. Marking the central spot of the island, it's also the crossroads for old Caminos Reales (royal paths) once used to travel about Gran Canaria on foot. These Caminos are currently receiving much attention and restoration. A number of well marked walking trails are easily accessed from a base in Tejeda, including walks to Roque Nublo (dramatic volcanic spine rock formations), Pico de las Nieves (Gran Canaria's highest point) and down to San Bartolome de Tirajana. Walking from Cruz de Tejeda to Roque Nublo is particularly popular.
Walkers in the area may well come across unmarked Guanche remains, prevalent in the area of Roque Bentayga about 10km to the southwest of Tejeda. Expect panoramic and spectacular views from the peak of Pozo de las Nieves. If you don't fancy walking it, you can actually drive to the top.
Tejeda, being a central stopping off point for tours and excursions, has ample choice of restaurants, bars and cafes - if you're here in February you'll have the benefit of enjoying the blossom on the many almond trees in this area.
Tejeda is an excellent base for walking, or if you plan to focus on touring Gran Canaria's interior it's a superb rural base, with ample amenities includings shops, restaurants and bars within this very attractive village. Also in Tejeda is the Museo de Esculturas Abraham Cardenes, Tel: 00 34 928 666 189, which displays work by Abraham Cardenes who was born in Tejeda.
