The town of Teror just a short distance to the southwest of Las Palmas is one of the prettiest historic locations on Gran Canaria, and an important site for one of Gran Canaria's most celebrated religious festival - the Fiesta de la Virgen del Pino (held annually in the first week of September). Pretty Canarian balconies and architecture, a stunning church at the centre, the Basilica de la Vigen del Pino (admission is free from 8am to noon, then 2-6pm) are what you can expect to see here. Inside the church it's ornate indeed, with the centrepiece being the bedecked 15th century carving of the Virgen de la Nieve all highly illuminated -to kitsch effect. The Virgin of the Pines is the Patron Saint of Gran Canaria. Visit Teror on the 8th September and see the town decked out for the Fiesta de la Virgen del Pino (the Feast Day of the Virgin of the Pine).
If you are based in Teror or visiting during the Fiesta period in September, note that it's restricted access into the town - no cars are allowed up here during this the most important fiesta religious day on Gran Canaria. It's a day of pilgrimage and many walk all day up from Las Palmas and elsewhere on the island - they've made a promise to the Virgin to do so. All very dramatic - but many believe that the Virgin has healing powers. Numerous surrounding mountain roads around Teror are also blocked off.
For examples of Canarian architecture on Gran Canaria, Teror is certainly a hotspot location. Beautifully carved wooden balconies and delightful stone Canarian houses about in the Plaza de Nuestra Senora del Pino around the church and adjacent Calle Real.
The Basilica de la Virgen del Pino, the church in the centre of Teror contains the statue of the virgin herself which dates from the 18th century and also contains paintings and statues by Jose Lujan Perez. Elsewhere in the square is the Casa Museo Patones de la Virgen del Pino - actually a 17th century house and still home to the Manrique de Lara family - guards of the Virgin for a few centuries! The house also now serves as a museum.
Fiesta time in early September is an excellent time to stay or visit, as the town comes alive with market stalls, live music, dancing and more. Sunday mornings are also a lively time in Teror when it hosts its weekly market.
