San Bartolome is another excellent base for walking holidays on Gran Canaria, and additionally benefits from easy access to the southern resorts via the Fataga road if you fancy nipping to the beach during your holiday. This Gran Canaria rural base commands spectacular views across the Tirajana valley.
It's hard to believe that this pretty little Gran Canaria village is actually the administrative centre of much of the south of the island, including the money making southern resorts of Maspalomas and Playa del Ingles.
Attractively set, San Bartolome de Tirajana sits at the base of an old volcanic crator. It's a historic central point on the island, and like Tejeda is known for its almond growing locally.
The Parish Church of Santiago in the centre of the town is well worth a look, with its three naves and delightful facade. If you're visiting or staying in San Bartolome you'll have ample opportunity to sample the fine liqueur produced in this area - called Guindilla, a delicious mix of rum, cherries and sugar. (Gran Canaria's rum by the way is world renowned - with Arucus being the central rum producing location on the island).
The nearby hamlet of Ayacata is a delight too, and if you're walking in the area you'll no doubt be visiting it. Other attractions in San Bartolome include the Sunday morning market held around the central church, and San Bartolome is also the focus of the Day of Santiago/St James on the 24/25th July annually. Camel Rides and horse riding are also easily accessed in nearby Fataga.
