Beautiful Teguise, not to be missed especially during Sunday mornings when the famous Teguise market is in full flow. Visit at other times to sample some of the fine Canarian food in one of the many superb Bodegas in Teguise. It's an attractive village to stroll around early evening, with some excellent specialist shopping and a pretty central square overlooked by the Iglesia de la Virgen de Guadalupe.
This pretty Lanzarote village come town was once the capital of the island before Arrecife took over - it made sense having the capital of Lanzarote slightly inland in a period of intense invasion by pirates - when this eased a coastal port - Arrecife - took Teguise's place.
Teguise Sunday Market is very popular with visitors, and certainly the best weekly market on Lanzarote. Historic Teguise, Lanzarote's one time capital is a beautiful setting and as well as the bustling market there are numerous arts and crafts shops, bodegas, cafes and more here in Teguise.
Teguise market is enormous - with stalls selling jewellery, perfumes, aloe vera products, electricals, stuffed toys - you name it, it's here. Cheeses, various Lanzarote food and specialist products including nuts and almonds. There's some super clothes stalls here too, with everything from hats to sandles to pretty summer dresses.
Parking is no problem, there are numerous car parks around Teguise - which are cheap, so it's easy to visit with your hire car. Alternatively hook into one of the Teguise Market coach tours (see excursion section on this website) and be whisked there by coach. The market takes place on Sunday morning, usually rapping up about 2pm. Expect entertainment here too, with live music and more. Teguise market is definitely one of the best markets across all the Canaries.
The Castillo de Santa Barbara looks down on Teguise from it's great height, and is worth the visit purely for the views, let alone the fascinating in-house museum exploring the history of migration from Lanzarote and the Canary Islands to Spanish colonies. It sits up on Guanpay Peak just a short distance from Teguise and dates back to the 16th century, errected by Sancho de Herrera. It's restoration and now in-house museum is to be celebrated indeed and well worth a visit.
