Lanzarote Tourism Guide - Yaiza

Lanzarote accommodation in and around Yaiza tends to be on the rather luxurious and rural side. It's a pretty Lanzarote village by all appearances, but Yaiza is actually an important administrative centre, with the southern resorts of Lanzarote falling under it's control.

Some of Yaiza was destroyed by the lava flows of Timanfaya volcanoes during the 18th century, but much of it survived. Today, it's home to some very pleasant Bodega restaurants and a church - Nuestra Senora de los Remedios, one of the most beautiful on Lanzarote with blue, white and gold painted decor - well worth a look. The village is beautifully presented, with numerous palm trees, flowers and pretty houses. Manrique rather liked Yaiza. Many visitors tend to just travel through it, on their way to Timanfaya from the southern resorts, but if you're not staying here it's well worth a stop. Just opposite the church is the Benito Armas Cultural centre, and a scattering of some nice shops and art galleries around the village.

Things to do in Yaiza

Just opposite the church is the Benito Armas Cultural centre, and a scattering of some nice shops and art galleries around the village.

If you're staying here, you're in a superb base for Lanzarote inland walking, plus easy access into Timanfaya National Park. Nearby are other pretty historic villages such as Uga - and beyond the wine region of the La Geria valley. Uga is a popular base for hooking into camel rides into Timanfaya - there's a horse riding centre and camel park here. (see weblink right).

Also near Yaiza is the pretty village of Femes, popular with visitors and situated within the Los Ajaches mountain range. The focal point of Fems is the attractive church of San Marcial del Rubicon (the patron saint of Lanzarote and a hotspot for pilgrimage annually). This church survived the Lanzarote volcanic eruptions of 1730 to 1736. Take the hiking trail upto Atalaya de Femes (1995ft) for great views across to Playa Blanca and Fuerteventura! Yaiza offers a superb base for walking.

Lanzarote A Caballo Horse Riding Center, Carretera Arrecife - Yaiza, km 17, 35570. Yaiza. Yaiza, Lanzarote. Phone no.: 928.830.038. (see their weblink right for more details - they do camel rides and Paintballing too, as well as pony rides and the La Caravana restaurant on-site).

The La Geria Wine Region

Close to Yaiza is Lanzarote's main wine region sitting on the edge of the bad lands or malpais. The area is occupied by numerous vines and wine cellars/bodegas, so if you're on the Lanzarote wine trail you'll want to explore this area. You'll notice the black lava ash called Picon or Lapili which serves to protect the vines from drying out, capturing moisture from dew. Malvasia wine is produced here - available for sampling in many of the bodegas in the area.

La Geria Bodega, La Geria 3, 35570 Yaiza, Lanzarote. Tel / Fax: 0034-928 173115.

Other Bodegas in the area include Bodega El Chupadero just 4km to the north of Uga. Also in Masdache just out of the village is Bodega El Campesino. The most well known bodega in the area is El Grifo - it's the oldest too, built in 1775. The best of Lanzarote wines are to be found at El Grifo - there's a wine museum here as well. Check out their weblink right for more details.
