Lanzarote Tourism Guide - Lanzarote Weather

Lanzarote, the nearest Canary Island to the African coast, hence the furthest east, has a climate which has been referred to as a perpetual spring and summer - perfect for winter sunshine and all year round holidays. The reasons for this perpetual warm climate and distinct to the Canary Islands, their position (nearer to Africa in fact than Spain), and Lanzarote's climate is particularly drier and hotter because this is one of the lowest lying islands. Lanzarote is without the high mountains of both Gran Canaria and Tenerife, so their's less variation within the island itself, and it's drier.

Another factor in Lanzarote's weather is the winds - perfect for windsurfing, kitesurfing and other watersports, the moist trade winds whisk down from the north making the northern coast of Lanzarote slightly wetter and cloudier than the south, but not dramatically so. Holidaymakers can expect about 2500 hours of sunny sunshine every year, with average temperatures between 18 to 24 degrees centigrade (64-75F) in the summer months (although it can creep much higher) and 16 to 20 degrees centigrade in Winter.

Lanzarote Weather Forecast

Lanzarote's rainfall is light on the whole, no big mountain ranges on this Canary island where clouds cluster and form. Average rainfall in Lanzarote is 117.5mm (that's 4.6 inches) annually. The wettest months are usually October and January, and warmly welcomed by local farmers.

Lanzarote Winds and African Weather

On the whole, moist trade winds blow down from a northward direction across the Canary Islands. Just occasionally though, and perhaps this will occur during your holiday on Lanzarote, the hot sirocco winds blow across from the Sahara along with dessert dust and very high temperatures (usually up in the 40s centigrade!). Local residents call this the Tiempo Africano and it's an annoyance to them, with both the dust and uncomfortable high temperatures.

Holidaymakers however won't be much bothered by it - although extra care needs to be taken with the high temperatures.
