Tenerife North's Los Rodeos Airport tragically became world renowned in the late 1970s when two 747 planes full of holidaymakers from the US and the Netherlands collided on Los Rodeos runway. Neither plane was supposed to be there on that fateful day in 1977. Both planes had been rerouted from the only other airport on the Canaries at the time - Las Palmas which was closed due to a bomb threat! The fog combined with confusion over air traffic control information was sited as the cause. All 583 passenger, including air crew, died.
