Tenerife Tourism Guide - Costa Adeje

Calling all families, couples and laid back lazy bar and sheltered beach lovers, Costa Adeje is the Tenerife resort just for you. Manmade indeed, Costa Adeje is a pretty, clean Tenerife south resort with a delightful blue flag beach, bars and restaurants lining it's pleasant coastal promenade, and plenty going on for kids, including beach water float parks and even an excellent family waterpark. The excursion choice from Costa Adeje couldn't be better - there are numerous Tenerife excursion outlets along the coast offering everything from catamaran trips to fishing, to wider island tours. Check out the superb tourist information kiosk on the main beach for a good sourced of leaflets. It's the northerly tip of Playa de las Americas really - but rebranded to move away from what in recent years was some negative press on Las Americas and the Veronicas area. Costa Adeje offers the more luxurious accommodation, 4 and 5 star hotels are here. You'll pay a little more to stay in Costa Adeje rather than Playa de las Americas.

Definitely the pace is slower here than in Playa de las Americas, and it's a self contained resort with everything you'll need for a lazy beach holiday. You won't be short of watersports choice, you've everything here from pedaloes to banana boat rides to jet ski. Costa Adeje beach area is ideal for families - it's sheltered with excellent facilities all close at hand and sunbeds galore. So close to the T1 motorway too, so consider it for an upmarket, well equipped base if you're pushing out around Tenerife either further west to Gigantes and the Teno Mountains or north to Santa Cruz. Costa Adeje has a super market to, every Saturday and Thursday from 9am to 2pm, situated inland from Playa Fanabe beach in the El Duque area.

Costa Adeje Resort Tenerife Guide

Until fairly recently the southern Tenerife resort area described as Costa Adeje was lumped in with Playa de las Americas, but after rebranding and considerable marketing towards families Costa Adeje emerged as a resort in it's own right. The area usually considered to be Costa Adeje is everything west of Veronicas up through Puerto Colon, Toriscas, Fanabe, Playa del Duque and La Caleta. This south Tenerife coastal resort stretch is being rather skillfully twinned with it's inland historic namesake - Adeje, which has a history stretching back to pre-hispanic times, plus a selection of historic archetecture and numerous walking opportunities, particularly the famous Hell's Ravine otherwise known as the Barranco del Infierno.

Check the Costa Adeje tourist information guide website to the right for comprehensive information on the many family leisure pursuits available in Costa Adeje, including superb golf, Aqualand Waterpark, Kids parks and inflatables on Playa Fanabe, shopping, spas and baths, casinos and shows, top sheltered family beaches, diving and scuba diving, boat trips and whale watching, fiestas and bars and restaurants. All this should keep you busy for a while! Costa Adeje is one of the top family resort areas across the Canaries, and most accommodation is relatively new and leans towards the luxury side. Generally speaking, you'll pay a little more if you stay here in Costa Adeje than in Playa de las Americas or Los Cristianos.

According to the Costa Adeje official tourist information website (link right), 75 percent of accommodation establishments in Costa Adeje were built during the last two decades, and they continue in highlighting the fact that there are a particularly high number of 4 and 5 star hotels recently opened in the area. There are some award winning hotels here in Costa Adeje. The Puerto Colon area around the purpose built tourist harbour is a top Tenerife spot for Diving and Scuba Diving excursions (see weblinks right). Costa Adeje also has one of the Canary Islands' best waterparks on it's doorstep, plus a new pristine golf course. As a leisure holiday resort, Costa Adeje is hard to beat!

Costa Adeje Tenerife Resort Beaches

Costa Adeje has the pick of the beaches amongst Tenerife's southern resorts. The three beaches - Troya I, Troya II and Playa Fanabe are all Blue Flag award winning beaches and their quality shows, not just in the crystal clear waters and clean sands (which are a grey colour along this stretch), but also in the qualitiy of beach attractions here with everything from Pedalos to surf boards available. Troya I and II beaches are the oldest, with full lifeguard service provided in summer, plenty of sunbeds, restaurants, bars, local taxi ranks and bus stops. You even get showers, toilets and changing rooms here - a welcome these for families with children! Most importantly for families, the beaches on Costa Adeje offer sheltered bays and calm waters - perfect for the tots.

Playa del Duque is the furthest west, bordering on Playa Paraiso. This area is one of the newest in Costa Adeje and it's less crowded up this end. Plenty of parking, bars, restaurants, changing rooms, toilets, showers and public telephones.

Playa Fanabe in Cost Adeje is also a blue flag beach, and one of the most popular in the area. Dotted with palm trees, various family watersports outlets, an adjacent tourist info point, and lined with sunbeds and shades, this beach has excellent family amenities. Showers, changing rooms, toilets, telehones, parking, tax ranks and bus stops are all on or near this beach! A full lifeguard service is present too.

Smaller Playa La Pinta beach sits adjacent to Puerto Colon Marina (the hub of the diving and scuba diving scene, catamaran sailing and boat trips in the area). This beach is disabled friendly with easy access, and has good amenities with sunbeds and shades, parking, restaurants and bars, showers, changing rooms, toilets and local taxi ranks and bus stops plus a public telephone.

Adeje Tenerife Walking

If you do by any chance get bored of the great beaches on the Costa Adeje stretch of coast, head inland for some superb Tenerife walking. The Barranco del Infierno or Hell's Ravine walk which starts 350m above sea level from the top end of Adeje town at the end of Calle El Molino. The walk is about 6 km and takes 4 to 5 hours. Unless you're under 12 years you'll have to pay a few euros to access this walk, more than worth it for the spectacular scenery you'll see.

The path winds it's way up through the ravine where you'll see a variety of cactus. The path narrows as you move into the centre of the ravine and the vegetation gets denser. You can expect to see numerous indigenous Canarian plans including Canarian Willows. Other walks in the area include the Roque del Conde, Ilfonche to Boca del Paso and Camino de Carrasco.

Within the village of inland Adeje there's a host of historical buildings including the Strong house dating back to 1555. This Cas Fuerte was built as a defence against pirate attacks. It's closed to the public, but you can view it from the outside.

Also in Adeje is a convent dating from 1679 with interesting Baroque boardering, the Casa del Duqe (the Duke's House) and the pretty Santa Ursula Church which is an important historical monument in the area dating back to 1586. It's quite a contrast here inland at Adeje compared to the bustling Costa Adeje holiday resorts.
