Three Tenerife resorts joined - Playa de las Americas, Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje - yet each has a slightly different flavour. There's been some rebranding going on here in recent years. No matter which of these three your based in, you've access to a host of Canary Islands holiday attractions including buzzing Tenerife nightlife in clubs, bars and restaurants, Tenerife waterparks (including the big Costa Adeje waterpark) and smaller affairs such as Skypark, and every possible watersports you can think of including diving trips, jet ski, catamaran sailing trips, fun water rides, paragliding and pedalos. Getting about isn't a problem. Numerous green buses pass through both Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos onroute west upto Los Gigantes (Bus no 473), east to El Medano (470) and north to Santa Cruz (487). All buses stop on Avenida Juan Carlos I near the Valdes Center, and there are taxi ranks outside most shopping centres. Parking in Playa de las Americas can be a nightmare if you're just visiting for the day in a car hire, although there are paying car parks underground near the beaches. Free parking is usually available away from the beaches, but you might face a 20 to 30 minute walk to the beach.
Playa de las Americas, out of the three co-joined Tenerife resorts bills itself as a little more upmarket. True enough, there's some luxury 4 and 5 star leisure hotels here, and the bars and promenade are a little swisher than it's neighbour Los Cristianos. Playa de las Americas' nightlife is perhaps more oriented towards the young, stag and hen parties will find plenty of clubs, watersports, and excursions such as karting to keep them happy. Most of the big nightclubs are based in Las Americas, and being centrally placed between Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos, Playa de las Americas is the liveliest of the three and less family oriented than the other two. Titsa green buses run practically everywhere in Tenerife from the main resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas. Check their weblink right for details of routes and fares.
There's a cetain glitz and glamour to Playa de las Americas, and some have compared parts of it to a mini Las Vegas. Many of the hotels, particularly along the accessible Las Americas promenade are adorned with rather kitsch Romanesque statues and an eccentric mish mash of architecture. The Veronicas area, labelled in the past as a rather seedy affair, has seen some improvements in recent months, after drugs raids, renovation and a general clampdown by local police.
Playa de las Americas is one of the Canary Islands most developed resorts - not much space here left untouched by hotels, shopping centres, bars and restaurants! You're best navigating around Las Americas by hotels and bars rather than street names (which they keep changing anyway!) Resort amenities don't get much better - Playa de las Americas has a fine stretch of manmade beach including Playa del Bobo Las Cuevitas and Playa de Troya. Rows of sunbeds line the beach, plus numerous watersports providers. There's not a bad bit of surfing to be had here when the winds up.
Playa de las Americas' beaches are generally of a better standard, and offer some fine views of La Gomera across the water, and on a clear day Teide rising up in the centre of the island. Bars and restaurants offer familiar English food and beers - not much of a whiff of traditional Canarian food here, but plenty of Macdonalds, Chinese, Tex Mex, and Italian. The Chinese restaurants are particularly good value. All the restaurants, especially along the promenade compete for your business, so expect to be enticed by friendly waiters as you wander for your urr quiet prom stroll! Checkout the street markets in Playa de las Americas, held weekly on Thursday and Saturday mornings in front of the Hotel Esmeralda in Torviscas.
Basing yourself in Playa de las Americas, and Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje to a lesser extent means your at the centre of Tenerife's resort action - this means lots of life and people. If you're looking for resort amenities, but a quieter base pick one of the off-shot resorts further west or east such as Torviscas and Playa Paraiso to the west or Las Galletas to the east.
Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos are the big two resorts in the south of Tenerife. Sheltered superb family beaches with safe and calm bathing are on the menu here. These two longstanding resorts are joined together by a marvellously accessible promenade lined with restaurants offering everything from Chinese to fast food, bars, holidays shops and cafes. Beaches are protected by breakwaters, and Playa de Las Vistas between the two resorts is probably the most accessible beach on the planet for disabled visitors. The promenade too is fully accessible to visitors in wheelchairs (checkout Orange Badge Mobility Specialists weblink right).
Think of a watersport and you'll find it here in Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos - jet ski, fun water rides, pedalos, a spot of surfing, diving excursions, catamaran sailing trips and more. Nearby Costa Adeje bordering on Las Americas is more of the same, but with perhaps more of a family oriented feel going on here - it's newer too. The best choice of waterparks and themeparks in the Canaries, plus golf complexes Sky Parks, Go-Karting, nightclubs, bars and restaurants.

Tenerife nightlife is renowned, sometimes for the wrong reasons as in rescent years the Veronicas area of Playa de las Americas has had a somewhat negative press. After a few drug raids and a bit of smartening up they seem now to have it in hand. There were apparently a couple of murders here! Playa de las Americas remains the big one for pumping nightlife, with an excellent choice of bars lining the promenade and especially around the Veronicas and Starco Commercial Centres. Nightlife here is also good for families, with many of the larger hotels offering in-house entertainment, and most of the bars and restaurants welcome children and families with open arms.
Playa de las Americas remains popular with younger groups, and indeed is a top choice of stag and hen weekends. Neighbouring Los Cristianos has perhaps even more of a family atmosphere than Las Americas. It's also popular with holidaymakers who have mobility issues - Los Cristianos is tops for disabled access! The bars and restaurants here have a lower key vibe, with a spot of live music, karaoke and all round family entertainment.
Nightlife goes on well after 12 midnight in Playa de las Americas (whereas in neighbouring Los Cristianos it tends to shut down at midnight). Las Veronicas situated on Playa de las Americas' border with Costa Adeje is still the hub of the nightlife, with enough bars and clubs here to keep most partygoers happy. Most of the 18 to 30s head here for late night entertainment.
