Tenerife Tourism Guide - Los Cristianos

Los Cristianos, one of Tenerife's oldest resorts, has less of a manmade feel than glizy Playa de las Americas. There are specific reasons for this - it has a large resident Canarios population and despite massive development over the last 40 years or so it retains some of it's original fishing village feel. Fishing still goes on here, both by residents and via the deep sea fishing trips for the tourists. Los Cristianos and port are the main hub of activity, with ferries leaving frequently and daily to La Gomera (visible across the ocean from Los Cristianos), and less frequently to other Canary Islands such as El Hierro and La Palma. Development still goes on here on the outskirts of the resort, with some more luxurious accommodation springing up here, but it's low key and on the outskirts so shouldn't be a problem.

With just a 20 to 30 minute transfer time from Tenerife Sur Airport, Los Cristianos has changed well with the times and remains a favourite family holiday hotspot on Tenerife. Los Cristianos has another string to it's bow - it's developed as a key resort for disabled travellers and their carers. Care has been taken here to make Playa de Los Cristianos and Playa de Las Vistas beaches accessible for disabled visitors. The promenade too running on to Playa de las Americas is totally accessible to wheelchairs. Check the Orange Badge weblink right for details on disabled assistance equipment hire - they are based in Los Cristianos. See also the Arona tourist info link for lists of accessible areas in this award winning disabled holidays region of Tenerife. Titsa green buses run practically everywhere in Tenerife from the main resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas. Check their weblink right for details of routes and fares.

Los Cristianos Tenerife Tourist Guide

Quieter than Playa de las Americas, with a family feel come chilled lively atmosphere, Los Cristianos is the Tenerife resort of choice for visitors with mobility issues. It's easy to move about here as most of Los Cristianos is pedestrianised, and most of the bars, restaurants and shops are clustered around the beach promenades lining the main beaches Playa de Los Cristianos and Playa de Las Vistas. Tenerife resort shopping doesn't get better than Los Cristianos - with bargain tax free prices and everything from electricals to clothing. There are a large number of bargain shoe shops in Los Cristianos!

Los Cristianos is renowned for it's huge Sunday morning market held throughout the year - it's situated adjacent to the Arona Gran hotel to the east of the resort. Bartering is on the menu here! Overall, Los Cristianos is a cheery resort where locals mix with holidaymakers. The many restaurants and bars are family friendly and you'll have no problem with wheelchair access in many. Playa de Las Vistas is the prettier and larger beach, but the promenade area around Playa de Los Cristianos is where to head for the best shops, cafes, ice cream outlets and more character come evening time. Alongside Puerto Rico on Gran Canaria, Los Cristianos is one of the friendliest resorts on the Canaries with bargain prices everywhere, numerous boat trips and excursions available for booking around the port area, and how about a day trip across to La Gomera? Magic!

Disabled visitors will be delighted with the accessibility of Los Cristianos (and increasingly the other south Tenerife resorts and the Arona municipality). There's a history here to the excellent attitude and disabled access facilities in Los Cristianos. The Arona Tourist Information site (right) gives more details on the matter, but in summary in 1957 a small group of young Swedish travellers all with mobility issues arrived in Los Cristianos. Early on they seemed to have had an influence on Los Cristianos developing as a Tenerife resort with good disabled access, including the now 7km lon barrier free and completely wheelchair accessible promenade (it's the longest in Europe!) Many of the beaches, restaurants, bars and amenities in the resort are disabled friendly too! If only more resorts could be like this!
