Tenerife is tops for watersports choice. With a selection of well developed resorts, it's easy if your based in Los Cristianos, Playa de las Americas, Costa Adeje, Los Gigantes, Puerto Santiago or to the north in Puerto de la Cruz to access everything from diving and scuba diving, fishing (including carp fishing Tenerife), windsurfing, kitesurfing, fun waterrides, a choice of Tenerife Waterparks and Catamaran sailing or boat trips! Checkout the choice too for Spa Wellness centres emerging across Tenerife, and some superb new marinas springing up!
Tenerife is one of the best Canary Islands for dive sites. Particular Tenerife Diving hotspots (there are around 30 superb dive sites on Tenerife) include Las Galletas, Playa Paraiso (perfectly placed for access from the south Tenerife resorts) and Punta de la Rasca, in the South, alongside Garachico, Puerto de la Cruz and Punta de Teno in the North. Los Gigantes on the western side also offers a good choice of diving excursions. Move to El Medano to the south east of Tenerife and El Cabezo and La Jaquita beaches for some of the best kitesurfing and windsurfing hotspots on the Canaries. Check out the surf scene at Play Jardin in Puerto de la Cruz. Tenerife is also excellent for fishing trips - Los Cristianos marina is popular with for solo fishing and fishing trips, as is Los Gigantes and Costa Adeje. Catamaran sailing trips and a choice of boat trips are available from all the main Tenerife resorts, as are a choice of waterparks (especially in Playa de las Americas) and water fun rides.
With Tenerife's excellent choice of beaches around the southern resorts, and it's volcanic coastline offering some prime Canaries dive sites, you certainly won't be short of watersports choice around the main Tenerife resorts. Windsurfing and kitesurfing - head to El Medano in the south. Diving - head to Las Galletas for top diving spots, and for a good choice of diving excursions both Puerto Colon and Los Gigantes are excellent.
Starting with Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos - the big two in the south of Tenerife. Sheltered superb family beaches with safe and calm bathing are on the menu here. These two longstanding resorts are joined together by a marvellously accessible promenade lined with restaurants offering everything from Chinese to fast food, bars, holidays shops and cafes. Beaches are protected by breakwaters, and Playa de Las Vistas between the two resorts is probably the most accessible beach on the planet for disabled visitors. The promenade too is fully accessible to visitors in wheelchairs (checkout Orange Badge Mobility Specialists weblink right).
Think of a watersport and you'll find it here in Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos - jet ski, fun water rides, pedalos, a spot of surfing, diving excursions, catamaran sailing trips and more. Nearby Costa Adeje bordering on Las Americas is more of the same, but with perhaps more of a family oriented feel going on here - it's newer too. The best choice of waterparks and themeparks in the Canaries, plus golf complexes Sky Parks, Go-Karting, nightclubs, bars and restaurants. Heading north, just outside the capital Santa Cruz is the stunning 1.5km manmade beach of with golden sands from the Sahara - Playa de las Teresitas. Bordered by the Anaga mountains, Las Teresitas is dotted with palm trees, a few low key bars and restaurants, and volley ball is popular here. A popular beach with Santa Cruz locals.
Puerto de la Cruz is best known for the mammoth public swimming pool complex of Costa Martianez (designed by Cesar Manrique in the late 1970s), but Playa Jardin to the west is a very pretty black sandy beach with palm trees and some great bodyboard surfing when the swells up. Move west of Puerto de la Cruz to Playa San Marcos another great black sandy beach, or east of Puerto de la Cruz to El Bullullo for more great waves and a sandy beach. Moving back down south to El Medano north of Los Cristianos, you get good winds here, and great kitesurfing and windsurfing. Other excellent beaches on Tenerife include the pretty bay beach of Playa de la Arena to the west near Los Gigantes. For the best swimming pool complexes head to the public swimming pool in Los Gigantes near the marina, Martinez in Puerto de la Cruz, and the superb sea water pools at Garachico.
The big Tenerife resorts including Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas offer a superb choice of fishing trips from their harbours, including carp fishing Tenerife. Just look for the lines of kiosks both at Los Cristianos around the port adjacent to Playa de Los Cristianos, or alternatively seek out the Water Sport Club, Puerto Colon, Costa Adeje.
There's also a wide selection of Whale and Dolphin watching boat trips available near the port at Los Cristianos, and in Puerto Colon in Costa Adeje. Along the promenade at Puerto Colon and adjacent to Los Cristianos port there are a number of kiosks selling whale and dolphin watching boat trips, as well as fishing and catamaran sailing trips. For Whales and Dolphins watching trips checkout the Lady Shelly Catamaran weblink right for details. They're based on Los Cristianos' main pier near the port.
There are some exciting new marina projects just completed or underway on Tenerife. A good example is the new San Miguel Marina situated between Amarilla Golf and Golf del Sur in South Tenerife. Opened in August 2006, lots of scuba diving and sailing trips will be available, plus plenty of space to berth. These pristine new ports are like mini water resorts, with services such as chemists, supermarkets and banks/cashpoints all on-site. See San Miguel Marina weblink right for details.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife's marina is huge, with a capacity of 400 berths and shops, repair workshops, services and catering all on-site. Tel: +34 922 292184. There are a few Yacht Charter companies based on the marina if you want to hire sailing and motorboats either with or without a driver. There's a sailing school here too. Check the Ecc Yacht Charter weblink right for details.
El Medano and El Cabezo Bay and beach is a well known windsurfing hotspot amongst the windsurfing scene - it's a World Cup Windsurfing beach this one. This bohemian resort - if you could call it a resort - it feels more like a bustling Spanish village than a resort. It's not an exaggeration to say that El Medano really represents where it's at as far as windsurfing (and some kite surfing is concerned). The spot is particularly favoured by intermediate and advanced windsurfers - and advanced kite surfers who can deal with dodging the many windsurfers and the rocks positioned at the end of the bays.
What's more, El Medano has two winsurfing sailing areas either side of it's character harbour, promenade and jetty. It's also situated just 5 minutes from Tenerife South Airport, has one of the best markets on Tenerife (weekly on Saturday mornings) and a delightful selection of surf shops, chic clothes shops and trendy bars and restaurants. (fresh fish on the Costa Silencio coastal stretch is also another highlight - most of the locations on this coastline started life as Tenerife fishing villages.
The most experienced windsurfers head out to the North Bay area of El Medano. You'll find more intermediates on it's south bay area. It's not just the superb windsurfing conditions you have here, there's also a bit of a windsurfing scene which has evolved over the years making for some great evening gatherings in the town centre and a live music and bar scene to beat all! A fair bit of funding has poured into locations like El Medano on Tenerife in recent years and it shows. Checkout the pretty timber boardwalk here, various bits of public art.
El Medano is up there is Sotavento and other windsurfing and kitesurfing hotspots on Fuerteventura. There are two main windsurfing equpment hrie outlets here, including the Fanatic Fun Factory on North Bay, and another on Playa Sur. Take a look at some of the windsurfing and surfing weblinks to the right for more details.
Las Galletas to the south east of Playa de la America is the top diving site spot in the south of Tenerife. The three top dive sites at Las Galletas include Las Rayas, which is crammed with marine life like rays and moray eels and there's a few wrecks. here too. Los Roncadores is another top diving spot here with plenty of marine life, wrecks and chools of Roncador grunts.. Further up the south coast Playa San Juan is another popular dive site - the Cueva de los Cerebros are here and are one of the best cave dive sites on the island. If you're really a fan of diving, then locate yourself somewhere along the Costa del Silencio coast in south Tenerife. Check out the Tenerife Diving weblinks to the right for more details, particularly Island Divers in Costa Del Silencio who offer an excellent choice of dive site excursions.
Other popular Tenerife dive sites include Playa Paraiso, La Caleta and Las Vistas. For a comprehensive list of good dive sites on Tenerife check out the diving weblinks to the right. Numerous diving excursions leave from the main resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas, and head towards top dive sites either around Playa Paraiso or east towards Las Galletas and the Costa del Silencio stretch. The rocky cliffs at Los Gigantes provide an excellent setting for diving, and a number of Tenerife diving excursions leave from the bustline marina at Los Gigantes. Check out the Los Gigantes Diving Excusion weblinks right fo details. Tenerife has it's own yellow submarine diver similar to the yellow submarine excursions on Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. The yellow submarine family excursion is based at Las Galletas harbour in south Tenerife.
Ever heard of Bob Diving (no it's not diving with bob). 'First their was scuba diving, then apparently there was diving with Bob! It's a fairly new craze taking off in the Puerto Colon area near Playa de las Americas (see Bob Diving weblink to the right - it looks like great fun, judge for yourself from the photos of the website!). Basically it's diving to low depths of around 1.55 metres whilst sitting on a mini scooter submarine - whatever next. If learning to dive seems like a little too much effort, then Bob Diving might appeal - and you can do it in small groups too. Find and contact Bob Diving at Puerto Colon, Pier no. 4, Playa de Las Americas, Tenerife. Tel: 0034-670839516. Looks hilarious!
