Just a short distance inland from popular Tenerife family holiday resort Costa Adeje is one of Tenerife's hidden rural gems - Adeje. This Tenerife village come town has a history stretching back to prehispanic times and the Guanches. Indeed links have been made between the word Adeje - a valley, district and small town in Tenerife to Adejad, a Berber tribe in Morocco.
Adeje today is a popular rural location for daytrippers from the southern Tenerife resorts looking to view the many historical buildings here and enjoy some of the networks of footpaths in the area, particularly the Barranco del Infierno (hell's ravine). Adeje is a good rural base for Tenerife walking holidays, yet with easy access to superb family beaches at Costa Adeje and the many resort attractions and indeed large waterpark.
Granadilla de Abona sits inland from El Medano and touches the borders of the Teide National Park. You're in prime Tenerife walking territory here, with easy access to some of Tenerife's other peaks such as second highest Guajara (2,718metres). The local landscape is largely agricultural - Granadilla is famous for it's vegetable growing including cereals, grapes, pulses and potatoes.
San Eugenio Alto sits slightly inland from San Eugenio and Costa Adeje on the coast, and it's elevated up here bordering the Paraje Natural Caldera Del Rey. You've the best of both worlds - easy access to some superb Tenerife walking around the Caldera Del Rey, and easy access to great beaches on the Tenerife resorts lining the stretch of coast here in the south. Accommodation leans towards the luxury side too up in the alto!
San Isidro sits inland from El Medano on the south east coast of Tenerife and Granadilla. It's rather luxuriously rural here, right in the heart of the Abona municipality. A good Tenerife walking base with easy access to the beautiful bohemian Tenerife coastal resort of El Medano which has excellent facilities for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Tenerife car hire is again recommended if you're basing yourself in San Isidro. Elevated, and with rural views and good access to superb walks around Montana De Ifara and inland around Granadilla and beyond to the Teide National Park, San Miguel makes a good Canarian base for Tenerife walking holidays!
The stunning rural Tenerife village of Vilaflor is surrounded by pine forests, and is dotted with historic Canarian architecture and arts and crafts centres. Quiet, rural and prime walking territory, sometimes daytrippers stop briefly here on their way to see Mount Teide. Natural scenes of rural beauty abound in the area including the Tres Pernadas and Pino Gordo. The choice of wine and foods grown and produced locally, are renowned in Vilaflor. A perfect getaway from it all Tenerife rural and walking base. Car Hire is again recommended if you're based here in Vilalflor.
